Instructions

The patient must be fasting 12-14 hours prior to specimen collection (for infants, collect specimen just prior to next schedule feeding).

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Red-top tube.
Also acceptable: One Lavender-top tube (EDTA).

  • Protect specimen from light.
  • Do not use Serum Separator Tubes (SST).

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Protect specimen from light. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer plasma to an amber plastic transport tube or transport tube wrapped in aluminum foil and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 1.0 mL light-protected serum or plasma, refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 0.50 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not protected from light.
  • Serum separator tube (SST).
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Protect specimen from light. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer plasma to an amber plastic transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F).

Transport: 1.0 mL light-protected serum or plasma, refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 0.50 mL)

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): Unacceptable
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 30 days

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) - Vitamin B2 is involved in metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and protein. The clinical manifestations of deficiency are non-specific. Clinical manifestations include mucocutaneous lesions of the mouth and skin, corneal vascularization, anemia, and personality changes.
