Instructions
Inpatient collection, at designated sites only.
A minimum of 3.0 mL of blood must be wasted using an additive-free tube prior to specimen collection. Specimens must be labeled and inverted 5 times immediately after collection.
Viscoelastography [LAB1231432]
Viscoelastography with FIBRINOLYSIS [LAB1231433]
Viscoelastography with Heparin Neutralization [LAB1232325]
Collect in 3.2% Blue-top sodium citrate tubes. Test after 10 minutes but before 2 hours post-collection.
Viscoelastography Platelet Mapping ADP and AA [LAB1232324]
Collect in non-gel heparin tubes (dark green) with >14.5 IU but <20 IU heparin/mL of blood. Test after 30 minutes but before 2 hours post-collection.
Specimen Collection Criteria
Viscoelastography [LAB1231432], or
Viscoelastography with FIBRINOLYSIS [LAB1231433], or
Viscoelastography with Heparin Neutralization [LAB1232325]
Collect: One
plain Blue-top tube (3.2% Na. Citrate) at room temp (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F).
(Minimum Whole Blood: 3.0 mL)
Viscoelastography Platelet Mapping ADP and AA [LAB1232324]
Collect: One plain Dark Green-top tube (Heparin) at room temp (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F). (Minimum Whole Blood: 3.0 mL)
Tube must be completely filled by vacuum.
Rejection Criteria
- Specimens collected off-site.
- Specimens collected without prior blood wasting should be rejected. Blood from the initial draw will contain tissue and/or line contaminants.
- Any sample collected after a Red-top activator tube, or Red-top gel tube is used as the discard tube.
- Incompletely filled tubes.
- Clotted or partially clotted blood.
- Samples checked for clots using a wooden stick.
- Refrigerated specimens or specimens stored on ice.
- Collected in anything other than a 3.2% citrate tube (or heparin tube for Platelet Mapping).
- Specimen collected more than 2 hours prior to testing.
- Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
Storage
Specimen Stability for Testing:

Viscoelastography
Clinical Utility
Results will be available in TEG Manager® software and in EPIC.
Viscoelastography is used
clinically for evaluation of blood hemostasis properties in adult patients. The Platelet Mapping assay may be used to
provide qualitative assessment of platelet function in adult patients.
