Instructions

This test is now ordered automatically on patients with a Heparin Platelet Factor 4 Antibody OD of 0.4 to 1.999. The SRA should only be ordered directly when there is a very strong clinical suspicion of heparin induced thrombocytopenia. In such cases, the ordering physician will need approval from a pathologist or pathology resident. Contact the Laboratory at 800-551-0488 with any questions.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: Two Gold-top SST tubes.

Send specimens to the Laboratory immediately after collection for processing. 

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Let specimens clot 30-60 minutes then centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Transfer serum to plastic transport tubes and immediately freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 5.0 mL serum, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 1.0 mL)

Rejection Criteria

Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Let specimens clot 30-60 minutes then centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Transfer serum to plastic transport tubes and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below) immediately.

Transport: 5.0 mL serum, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 1.0 mL)

Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) acceptable if received within 7 days.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Indefinitely

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.
