Instructions

  • A control specimen from a healthy, non-related individual must be collected.
  • Collect specimens Monday – Thursday, before 12:00 pm only. Specimens must be sent out the same day as collection.

Laboratory

Sent to Mayo Clinic Laboratories in Rochester, MN.

Performed

Monday – Friday
Results available in 4-5 days.

Reference Range

By Report.

Test Methodology

Semi-Quantitative Flow Cytometry.

Clinical Utility

  • Normal neutrophil function is dependent on a number of properties including migration toward the site of infection, phagocytosis, and anti-microbial activity. Measuring the Neutrophil Oxidative Burst indirectly assesses anti-microbial activity.
  • Patients with Chronic Granulomatous disease (CGD) may have an absent oxidative burst due to defects in neutrophil function.
