Instructions

Patient should refrain from taking excessive amounts of ascorbic acid or oxalate-rich foods (i.e. spinach, coffee, tea, chocolate, rhubarb) for at least 48 hours prior to the collection period.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: 10.0 mL random urine in a screw-capped container (preferred) or other sterile collection container. (Minimum: 6.0 mL)

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 10.0 mL random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 2.0 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
  • Specimens collected in metal-capped containers.

In-Lab Processing

Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F).

Add 2.0 mL 6N HCl per 100.0 mL urine.

Transport: 10.0 mL random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 2.0 mL)

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 7 days
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 24 days

Specimen Storage in Department prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory.
