Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: Random urine in a screw-capped container (preferred) or other sterile collection container. (Minimum: 2.5 mL)

NOTE: This test is only offered on patients 16 years of age or younger. Others will be cancelled.

For 17 years old and older alternate testing recommended:

  • Metanephrines, Urine 24-hour(LAB1231356)
  • Metanephrines Fractionated Free, Plasma

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 10.0 mL Random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 5.0 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Samples with pH <1
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Transport: 10.0 mL Random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 5.0 mL)

Test Methodology

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

Interpretation

Increased metanephrine levels are found in patients with tumors of the adrenal medulla (e.g., pheochromocytoma) or other tumors derived from neural crest cells (e.g., paragangliomas and neuroblastoma).

Alpha-methyldopa (alpha-Aldomet), an anti-hypertensive drug, interferes with this assay.
