Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One lavender EDTA or Yellow ACD A tube.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells within 6 hours of collection. Transfer 3.0 mL of plasma in a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 3.0 mL plasma, frozen, (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 2.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

• Whole blood EDTA
• Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Test Methodology

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

Interpretation

This test utilizes a real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction test from Abbott Molecular Systems to amplify a portion of the pol/integrase region of the HIV-1 genome. The qualitative limit of detection is 20 copies/mL (1.30 log cy/mL). A Not detected result does not rule out infection.
