Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: 3.0 mm Gastric/Antral or Duodenal biopsy collected in Brucella broth or Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) with 10-20% glycerol. Call Send Outs Lab (248-551-9045) for TSB with glycerol vials if needed.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimen in original collection tube (TSB with glycerol), keep refrigerated at (2-8°C or 36-46).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Maintain specimen in original collection tube (TSB with glycerol), keep refrigerated at (2-8°C or 36-46).

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
  • Transport swab with or without gel.
  • Stool.

In-Lab Processing

Maintain specimen in original collection tube(TSB with glycerol), keep refrigerated at (2-8°C or 36-46).

When received in Royal Oak Processing place specimen in -70°C freezer.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 48 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable
Frozen (-70°C/-94°F or below): 5 days

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.
