Specimen Collection Criteria

Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), in a sterile collection container. (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Transfer CSF to a plastic transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F).

Room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F) is acceptable for a maximum of four hours.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: CSF, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) (Minimum: 0.5 mL).

Rejection Criteria

Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

Laboratory

Royal Oak Automated Chemistry

Performed

Sunday – Saturday, 24 hours a day. Results available within 4 hours of receipt in the Laboratory.

Reference Range

AFP CSF reference range: <2 ng/mL.

Test Methodology

Chemiluminescent Immunoassay.

Interpretation

Evaluating the presence of germ-cell tumors in the central nervous system. CSF levels of AFP will also be elevated with brain metastases of testicular cancer.
