Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One plain Red-top tube.

Unacceptable: One Gold-top Serum Separator Tube (SST).

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Let specimen clot 30-60 minutes then centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube and refrigerate at (2-8°C or 36-46) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 2.0 mL serum, refrigerated at (2-8°C or 36-46). (Minimum: 0.4 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Gross hemolysis.
  • Grossly lipemic.
  • Grossly icteric.
  • Serum separator tube (SST).
  • Received at room temperature.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Clinical Utility

17-Hydroxypregnenolone is useful in the diagnosis of 3-Beta-Hydroxylase enzyme deficiency, a rare cause of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and 17-Hydroxylase (P450c17) enzyme deficiency.
