Test Codes



  • This panel is only available to patients at the Royal Oak hospital campus.
  • This panel includes: Sodium, Potassium, Glucose, Hemoglobin, and calculated Hematocrit.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One 4.0 mL Dark Green-top Lithium Heparin tube. (Minimum Whole Blood: 1.0 mL)

Send specimen STAT to the Laboratory after collection. 

Do NOT use Dark Green sodium heparin or Light Green plasma separator tubes.

Rejection Criteria

  • Moderate to grossly hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens not received in the Laboratory within 1 hour of collection.
  • Specimens collected in sodium heparin or heparin plasma separator tubes

In-Lab Processing

Immediately analyze the whole blood specimen upon receipt in the Laboratory. Centrifuge after whole blood testing is complete.

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 1 hour
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): Unacceptable
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days

STAT results available within 30 minutes of receipt in the Laboratory.

Clinical Utility

This panel provides rapid turnaround time for basic metabolic analytes on a whole blood specimen drawn before a surgery.
