Clinical Utility
Influenza B is generally less severe in nature than Influenza A and outbreaks are generally more localized. Serology testing can be used when isolation of the organism by culture is unsuccessful. The presence of IgM class antibody or a fourfold or greater rise in titer in paired (acute and convalescent) specimens indicates recent infection. The presence of IgG class antibody generally indicates past exposure and immunity.
