Instructions

  • A Urine Creatinine test is performed on each sample.
  • Please refer to the Specimen Collection Manual for instructions on 24 Hour Urine Collection:
  • Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substances. Patients should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and non-essential over-the-counter medications (upon the advice of their physician). High concentrations of iodine may interfere with elemental testing.
  • Abstinence from iodine-containing medications or contrast agents for at least 1 month prior to collecting specimens for elemental testing is recommended.
  • Urine collected within 48 hours after administration of a gadolinium (Gd) containing contrast media (may occur with MRI studies) will not be tested.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): 24 hour urine sample with no preservative.
Also acceptable: Random urine specimen in a screw-capped container (preferred) or other sterile collection cup. (Min: 1.0 mL)

  • Keep 24 hour urine specimen iced or refrigerated during collection.
  • Include start and end dates and times for the collection period on the specimen container.

Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimens refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Entire 24 hour urine collection, or random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F).

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 7 days
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 14 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 1 year

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Sendout Laboratory with any questions.
