Instructions

  • The Respiratory Virus Panel by PCR contains 20 viral targets: Influenza A (including subtypes H1, H3, and H1N1), Influenza B, RSV (A/B), Metapneumovirus, Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza virus 1-4, Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, 229E, NL63, HKU1, and OC43), and Bocavirus.
  • As of 10/11/21 this test also detects SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).
  • As a comprehensive test, orders received for individual respiratory viruses (SARS-CoV-2, influenza A/B, and RSV) may be considered duplicate and canceled.
  • RVP, Flu, RSV, and Covid swabbing should be performed at the physician office.
  • Please see instructions for Nasopharyngeal (NP) Swab Collection

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: ONE of the following specimen types:

  • Nasopharyngeal (NP) Swab: Place in viral transport medium (i.e., UVT, UTM).
    • During collection, please remember to leave the NP swab in the patient's nasopharynx for 30 seconds and to gently rotate the swab to obtain an adequate specimen. For more information, please refer to the Specimen Collection Manual for NP Swab Collection.
  • Bronchial Brush/Wash: Place in a sterile collection container.
  • Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL): Place in a sterile collection container.
  • Sputum (Expectorated, Tracheal, Trans-Tracheal, Nasotracheal, Endotracheal): Place in a sterile collection container.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimens refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) or on wet ice prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: All specimen types, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) or on wet ice.

Rejection Criteria

  • Dry swabs.
  • Plasma or serum.
  • Samples collected in bacterial transport media such as ESwab.
  • Contaminated media (e.g. yellow in color or contain black particles).

In-Lab Processing

Maintain specimens refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) until testing.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 2 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days

Laboratory

Royal Oak Molecular Pathology Laboratory

Performed

Sunday – Saturday.
Results available within 24-48 hours.

Reference Range

Negative (no virus detected).

Test Methodology

Multiplex Nucleic Acid Amplification. This test has been approved by the FDA for nasopharyngeal swab specimens. The performance characteristics of alternative specimens (sputum, bronchial brush/wash, bronchalveolar lavage) have been determined by Beaumont Laboratory.

Interpretation

By report.
