Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One plain Red-top tube.

Do not use Serum Separator Tubes.

Time of Collection: Trough, just prior to the next dose.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.

Laboratory

Sent to Mayo Clinic Laboratory, Rochester, MN.

Performed

Monday – Saturday
Results available in 3-6 days.

Reference Range

By report.

Test Methodology

Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Interpretation

Clinical effects generally require serum concentrations above 0.5 mcg/mL. Increased risk of toxicity is associated with amiodarone concentrations above 2.5 mcg/mL. Although therapeutic and toxic ranges are based only on the parent drug, the active metabolite N-desethylamiodarone should be present in similar concentrations to amiodarone.

Clinical Utility

Amiodarone (Cordarone) is an antiarrhythmic drug. This assay is used to monitor the therapeutic drug level and to evaluate potential cases of Amiodarone toxicity.
